Gift Aid

GIFT AID

Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows UK charities to claim extra money on  donations, at no extra cost to the donor.

As St Ives Arts Club is a registered charity, we are able to take advantage of the Gift Aid scheme. This means we can reclaim tax paid on certain payments we receive and 'Membership Fees' fall into this category.
If you pay UK tax, we are able reclaim a further 25% of the membership fees, you pay to us, from HMRC.

Please find below a further explanation of 'Gift Aid' and a link to a simple online declaration. If you need further information or help with the online form, then please ask.  Please email - stivesartsclubbooking@gmail.com

How Gift Aid Works

When you donate £1 to a charity, they can claim an extra 25p from the government. Your £1 becomes £1.25 for the charity.

This works because you have already paid tax on your income and the charity is allowed to reclaim that tax.

With your agreement we will also reclaim gift aid on any payments you have made in the past 4 years and all of your future payments.

Why is Gift Aid an extra 25%, if the charity is claiming back 20% tax?

This is down to a quirk of how the Gift Aid scheme works. The charity is allowed to claim 20% of the pre-tax amount you earned to make that donation.

So to donate £100 from your post-tax income, you would have needed to earn £125 before tax (since 20% of £125 is £25).

The charity then claims 20% of that pre-tax £125, which is £25.

And voilà, that £25 is 25% of your original £100 donation!

In other words, your membership subscription payment of £50 can be worth  £62.50 to St Ives Arts Club, if you agree to Gift Aid the amount.

Bonus for Higher-Rate Taxpayers

If you pay more than the basic rate of tax:

You can claim back the difference on your Self Assessment tax return.

Example: You donate £100, the charity gets £125, and you can claim back £25 if you're a 40% taxpayer.
