Nick Whitby - Understanding The Three Card Trick
Understanding The Three Card Trick is a chat, a presentation, or a one-man-show (you can decide) on the nature of Deception, and the simple ways that we can all be deceived in everyday, and not so everyday, ways.
It explores the famous ‘three card trick’ or ‘monte’, to demonstrate the extraodinarily simple principle behind many of the ruses used by society on the unwary population. This one-off evening at St. Ives Arts Club is an informal pilot for a show, and the audience is cordially invited to help it along in its development.
The writer/performer is playwright Nick Whitby whose plays have been performed on Broadway, at the Donmar and Hampstead theatres in London, and in over 50 major productions across Europe. His TV credits have included sketches for the Emmy-winning Smack the Pony and the Sean Hughes Show for Channel 4, as well as numerous dramas for ITV, and documentary work for the BBC.
The evening is in cabaret-style and audience members are encouraged to bring a bottle. Cups provided. Running time is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes, with a 10 minute interval.

An exploration in print & metal.
An exciting combination of print, metalwork & jewellery. Sharon McSwiney, based in St Ives will be joined by artist Sarah Roberts for the first time in Cornwall.
Sharon creates wall panels in copper & brass reflecting her love of nature & the sea. She is particularly inspired by the textures & colours of the Cornish coast utilising patination to apply unique decorative effects to the metal surfaces. Jewellery is formed in silver to represent some of the many beach treasures found such as limpets & barnacles.
Sarah Roberts Studio is where the creative focus is on the development of multi layered art works that combine shape, texture and colour.
Sarah uses a calm but immediate approach; there is a strong emphasis on combining balanced abstract shapes, energetic brush marks, collaged and layered textures to create a piece of work that can be placed in any environment. Paint and print are a strong influence in current works that celebrate simplicity.
Sharon has a retail gallery in St Ives:
