Imago Theatre Company - On The Terrace

This is staid post-War II England in 1963 just before its way of life was challenged by the swinging sixties cultural revolution. In the setting of a top girls' boarding school we observe the lives of five sophisticated and elegant upper-school pupils who, being prefects, enjoy special privileges, such as the use of the terrace as their own private space. From here they exert authority over the rest of the school and punish those who transgress. Such duties do not prevent them, however, from enjoying carefree, hedonistic lives that often deviate from the rules that they impose on others.

Baba Gallé Kante comes from Guinea-Conakry and is a master of the Fula or Fulani flute, a transverse flute that is also known as a tambin. Baba Gallé is now based in the UK.

Kadialy Kouyate was born in southern Senegal into a musical family of griots – West African hereditary bards who perpetuate the oral tradition and history of a village or family. Kadialy played the kora from an early age and was raised by his grandmother, from whom he learnt a wide repertoire of songs based on traditional stories. In addition to using these established forms he subsequently developed his own compositional style.

Kadialy is now based in the UK, and has performed widely, including at the Purcell Room and Midlands Arts Centre. He has broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and the BBC World Service, including a live transmission from the WOMAD Festival.

Exhibition - John Clare

Born in Widnes, Lancashire, Clare has had a wide-ranging career. Jazz, psychoanalysis and the inner-world form a backdrop to his work as a painter. As a psychotherapist he has written on Samuel Beckett and is also the author of a book on dreaming and the socio-cultural world. In 1974 he founded the jazz and black music project 'Honest Jon's Records', now the longest running record/CD shop in London. His art encompasses notions of the self, memory, desire, mourning and loss. He sees painting as being, like music, an emotional language which cannot be translated into words. Like the dream, it is a potential space in which to explore both inner and outer reality.

Clare now lives and works on the Welsh border in Hay-on-Wye. He has also painted for many years in South West France. In 1984, after working with the sculptor, Michael Werner, he met the eminent painter Basil Beattie R.A, who became a friend and mentor. Basil will be guest of honour for the first 3 days of the exhibition.

Yann Fanet - Words for Music Surely

An evening with WB Yeats in music.

Following the release of his album Words for Music Surely, Yann Fanet will be performing poems by Irish poet WB Yeats turned into songs. The selection ranges from Yeats's early poetry (The Lake Isle of Innisfree, The Stolen Child, etc...) to the late poems (The Ghost of Roger Casement, I am of Ireland, etc... ).

The songs cover the themes dear to Yeats such as the nostalgia for Sligo, his love for Maud Gonne, the Celtic revival, folk tales, the Irish identity, old age or death. The songs are very melodic and inspired by Yann's love for Irish and Scottish music.

Yann mainly plays the guitar and sings. He will be accompanied by fiddle player Hudson Swan and bass player Ashley Withey. Yeats described some of his poems as ''Words for Music Perhaps''. With these songs you will be convinced that they are words for music surely.

World Classics Series - Concert 30 – Music of Sweden

Peter Hedlund, nyckelharpa.

Sweden's foremost traditional instrument, the nyckelharpa, is a bowed, keyed fiddle, which has a beautifully rich, powerful and evocative sound. Peter Hedlund, from Hälsingland in northern central Sweden, is a riksspelman (Swedish traditional musician laureate) and the only living nyckelharpa player to hold the coveted Zorn guldmärke (Zorn gold award).

This is a unique opportunity to hear Peter Hedlund perform during his first ever concert tour of the UK, of which his St Ives recital will be the focal event.

Peter tours worldwide, and in Sweden he has on several occasions played for the royal family, including at the royal wedding in 1976. He has appeared as a soloist with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and together with ABBA's Benny Andersson, and has played for numerous TV and radio programmes, dating from the 70s to the present day.
