WORLD CLASSICS CONCERT SERIES AT ST IVES ARTS CLUB

GENESIS OF THE SERIES AND INITIAL CONCERTS

The original plan was to present a series of occasional concerts of European classical music, bringing top-class musicians to St Ives. The first concert – in May 2007 – was in collaboration with 'Live Music Now!', a concert agency for young and emerging musicians. Somewhat fortuitously, the agency proposed for this pilot recital the Rosewood Duo, a Chinese ensemble featuring the talented young Chinese cimbalom player Ying Han.

The great success of this event demonstrated a clear interest in ethnic music, so we followed it up in July 2007 with a recital of Senegalese music by the griot and kora player Kadialy Kouyate, which sold out – indeed it was oversubscribed. These initial two concerts established that there was an enthusiastic audience for ethnic music in West Cornwall, and we decided that we should continue in the same vein. Thus was the World Classics Series born.

PLANS FOR SPRING 2010

We are hoping to present Music of Iran for santoor (Farshad Mohammadi) and Music of Serbia II for accordion duet (MilošMilivojević & Živorad Nikolić) in March/April/May. Watch this space!

– The Indian and Azeri concerts are part of Asian Music Circuit UK tours, and we are once again hugely indebted to Viram Jasani of the AMC for his organisational and financial support. See <www.amc.org.uk> regarding all the Indian and Azeri artists.
