Following on from concerts of North Indian, African and Colombian music in 2023 and 2024, the World Classics Series continues with a fado recital by Claudia Aurora, accompanied by Javier Moreno on Spanish guitar and Pedro Velasco on Portuguese guitar.

Porto-born Claudia Aurora has been based in Bristol and latterly in London since 2003, and has made two CDs: Silêncio and Mulher do Norte. She has sung in London at King’s Place and on the South Bank, at Bristol’s Lantern Hall and at WOMAD, and tours have taken her to Poland and South Korea.

 

Fado (Portuguese: fate) expresses loss, love and longing, and seeks to evoke a sense of saudade (~ yearning). There are two distinct genres – the Lisbon style and the Coimbra style – and the traditional accompaniment is Spanish guitar and Portuguese guitar. The latter instrument, which is iconically associated with fado, is a teardrop-shaped cittern, has six double courses of strings and uses the rare Preston tuners.
