Zjednoczone Terytoria - Associated Territories - De-Vernissage (Closure)
What is known in Europe as a de-vernissage, very similar to an opening, it celebrates the closing of an exhibition and is another chance for artists to sell their work.
There will be a short acoustic blues concert performed by Steve Mole (lead singer/guitarist of Me & The Devil).
Free drinks and nibblies to those who attend.
An exhibition of work by Joanna Borof, Urszula Dulewicz, Magdalena Nowak, Anna Sokolska and Elzbieta Tegowska.

We are not connected by the same slogans, ideas or beliefs. What associates us is a similar attitude to our work and the inner need for co-operation.
This sort of attitude has created long lasting artistic friendships, common activities and common aims. All of us to a certain degree and meaning are leaders, but at the same time we want to share our work and be actively associating our individual territories

Well this is where it all started! - In 1890 the Artists community of St Ives decided that they needed their own Organisation and premises to gather at each weekend to socialise and celebrate their work and culture. It was the “hottest ticket” in town and a much sought after venue - and we like to think that it still is! … and the premises need to be protected for future generations.
This year we had a visit from the Beast from the East who decided to re-arrange the seaward corner of the Roof together with some of the cladding panels, guttering etc. On inspection additional maintenance works were identified resulting in significant repair costs over and above what our Insurers will pay for.
The Trustees, Committee Members & Friends of the Arts Club, decided to launch a number of self - help fundraising schemes and what better way than for our in house Artists to share with you their skills!
We are pleased to announce our original and unique sale of work project - Raise the Roof - of 8” x 8” / 20mm x 20mm canvasses, which have been donated by Members to be sold at a very affordable £40 with all proceeds going to our Building Fund. The Canvasses will be available to view and purchase from 10.00am Saturday 8th September at the St Ives Arts Club.
Please come and support or Fundraising and take away a small masterpiece of original Artwork.
September Festival - Film Season - The Misfits
This is an underrated gem of a film, both poetic and harsh. Three failed men come together in the Nevada desert to catch wild mustang to be slaughtered for dog food. An ageing cowboy, a bronco-buster and a former war pilot.
Roslyn is a down-onher- luck divorcee who is looking for someone to latch onto. Their values are questioned by Roslyn who is repelled by the cruelty of their calling.

September Festival - Film Season - A Taste Of Honey
Tony Robinson's kitchen sink drama tells the funny, tragic tale of Jo, a neglected wide-eyed yet worldly teenager seeking affection. Jo is a Manchester girl, sick of school and bored with life. She meets a sailor and becomes pregnant.
To get away from her alcoholic mother she takes up and moves in with Geoffrey a gay man. He looks after her taking over the cooking, cleaning and decorating. This slice-of-life film looks at working class poor, mix-race relationships, teenage pregnancy and homosexuality, most of which were taboo subjects or illegal in the 60s.

The Ladykillers is a macabre comedy of dark deeds. A gang of thieves, hiding out disguised as a music quartet in the genteel Edwardian home of the very proper Mrs. Wilberforce, plan to dupe her into picking-up the loot after they rob a security van.
The mismatched gang are; Harry - a huffy teddy-boy, One Round - a punched drunk ex- boxer, Louie - a ruthless unsmiling European, The Major - a phoney army conman, and Professor Marcus, a sinister madman who makes a brilliantly threatening appearance.

The cruellest of all Hollywood's self-exposes. Gloria Swanson plays a mesmerising, intense Nora Desmond, a forgotten silent movie star attempting her come-back. She comes into contact with the new Hollywood, represented by William Holden's washed-up, cynical screenwriter Joe Gillis.
Nora has Joe facilitate her screen return by having him edit her crazy script 'Salome', a challenging task that steers him, complacently, towards a gigolo's existence.

September Festival - Film Season - 12 Angry Men
The 12 angry men of this film are jurors in a murder case. An 18-year-old boy is accused of stabbing his father to death, if convicted he faces the electric chair. The odds are against him with 11 convinced of his guilt, while one man alone has his doubts.
The court case is only the framework of this film, the greatness lies in the 12 characters who are in a small room with no air-con on one of New York's hottest days, with what seems like a forgone conclusion. Prejudice and bigotry spill forth and tempers flare.

The Mishra brothers are India’s foremost exponents of the florid and virtuosic khyal vocal style. We are extremely fortunate that Rajan & Sajan have agreed to appear in St Ives, this being their only concert outside London during their visit from India.
They will be accompanied on tabla (player tba), with harmonium (Sumit Mishra) echoing the singing and enriching the texture.

Exhibition - Into the Mystic - Steve Payter
Into the Mystic is the latest body of work from photographer and enamel artist, Steve Payter of Artisan Cornwall. Its focus is the elemental and raw nature of the evocative Penwith Peninsula, and comprises photography, jewellery and a new range of fused enamel images.
Much of the new work has a ‘water and rocks’ theme and the flagship image is an atmospheric shot of ancient sea-worn boulders at Porth Nanven emerging wet and gleaming from the enveloping mists of the incoming tide. The image is printed direct onto a frameless aluminium panel providing a glare-free finish and a subtle shimmer which emphasises the colours and textures of these fascinating rocks.
Complementing the photographic work, but on a much smaller scale, will be a new range of framed abstract images created in fused enamel. Using copper and aluminium as a base, Steve fuses and builds up layers of enamel to create individual and contemporary pieces of work that are redolent of the natural vistas of Cornwall’s seas, skies, rocks and moors.
Completing the show will be Steve’s range of enamel earrings - graphic designs in a range of shapes and sizes in aluminium, copper and stainless steel.
Mounted prints and cards will also be available.

Imago Theatre - 'Footfalls' and 'Endgame'
'Footfalls' deals with a specific situation, an isolated daughter called May caring for a dying mother. May, who is in her forties, is pacing up and down in her dishevelled night clothes.
The play was written in 1976 for the actress Billie Whitelaw and was first staged at the Royal Court Theatre directed by Samuel Beckett.
'Endgame' has a minimalist interior, four people live out their time: Hamm, his parents Nagg and Nell, and his servant Clov. All the characters, with the exception of Nell who is beyond caring, are waiting for something. A classic play from the ‘Theatre of the Absurd’.

Christine Penberthy - Artist.
Born in a village just outside Birmingham in 1940. My mother told me later that the name of the nursing home was called St. Ives. At 3 yrs old. I was too young to be aware that we were at war . It was quite normal for me to see barage balloons, spitfires , bomb craters , barbed wire ,tanks going up and down the road and long queues, ration books in hand . In fact , as a small child , I found everything really exciting.
I have always loved drawing and painting. I won my first prize at the age of 8 yrs.at school in a safety first competion. At 15 I went to Sutton School of Art. My teacher said that I “Definitely had a talent”. It felt good to get that encouragment.
In 1962 I came to St Ives which had long since been my dream. As I stepped off the train I could see the lights around the harbour , felt the warmth of the seting sun and I knew somehow I would stay.
In 1963 I married into a Cornish family. I had five children. Bringing them up was a wonderful experience but very time consuming and painting was put on hold . I did find time to go to the St Ives School of Painting and joined the life classses, led by Majorie Mostyn and Leonard Fuller. That was a exciting time to be in beautiful St.Ives in the 60's with so many talented artists.
I rejoined the life drawing classes in the early 90's before starting an access foundation course based at Falmouth School of Art in 1989/1991. which was succesful - but because of a tight personal budget I was unable to continue onto the B.A. course in Fine Art. Not deterred I worked hard to make my own way in the art world. I have sold work at the Society of Artists, Norway Square, St.Ives, in private sales and had work in the group, “Taking Space”. I had a succesful one woman show, at the Mariners Gallery Norway Square with many sales.
I am now a member of the St Ives Arts Club and show some of my work on a regular basis. I have grown in confidence and my work shows my great interest in the “Human Being”. As human beings we have an enormous untapped potential for strength ,compassion and courage. I like to dig deep within myself to find these qualities and somehow I hope to share the possibilities that this has shown me with other people through my paintings and drawings.

Nick Harper
Son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper, Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. He played the guitar from the age of 10 and was surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up.
Here is an artist worth far more than the sum of his parts. His impeccable musical pedigree means nothing without the skills to back it up and skills Nick has, in his virtuoso guitar playing, song-writing and signature vocal acrobatics. Over a solo career of 10 studio albums, 2 EPs and 2 live albums - as well as the recent vinyl career retrospective - the quality of his musical output has only improved.
